More stations are broadcasting HD News and other local content. Viewers are watching HD on cable, satellite and over-the-air. Your DTV signal is generating revenue for your station.

February 17, 2009 is the date you turn off  your NTSC transmitter.  On that day you may be facing a lot of work in changing frequencies to a final allocation or even turning on a completely new transmitter.

Now is the best time to start planning and implementing a redundancy strategy.

VTI is uniquely positioned to help broadcasters through the many decisions that must be thought about in order to map out current and future planning.

What to think
about

Planning an update to an ATSC digital system requires many decisions.  Here are a few things to think about.

1. How long will our current equipment be supported by the manufacturer?

2. Is our existing system expandable to add redundancy or channels?

3. Do we want  a hybrid system with old and new gear?

4. How many channels do we need to plan for, now and in the future?

5. Do we want to think about sending two HD signals?

6. Do we want to manually switch over from failed equipment or do we want a system that monitors and heals itself?

7. Do we want the best quality or the best price?

8. Have we accounted for:
A) Closed Captioning
B) EAS
C) Neilson NAVE II
D) ASI and SMPTE-310 distribution

9. What kind of monitoring and signal analysis do we need?

10. Is there a Disaster Recovery plan we need to be thinking about?

11. What other single-points of failure are their in the digital chain?

CV24—24" TFT LCD Monitor and ClearVue Processor

Gone are the “good old days” of a master control operator sitting in front of an on-air switcher, back-timing prerolls to insert the commercials and promos.

Today’s master control is a high-efficiency, automated facility controlling one or more channels.  The master control operator now is busy segmenting programs, quality checking server content and verifying play and record lists.

The first thing to think about is migrating from tape to disk recording of programs and commercials.

Does the station use a traffic system that can be interfaced to a playlist or automation program?

This is not your fathers master control room

If so, it may make it much easier to manage more then one channel per operator.

Figuring out channel counts, storage requirements and redundancy all figure in to developing a specification for a video server.

Branding and switcher effects are becoming more important in a modern master control room.  Even small understaffed facilities can have the look of a network with the right equipment.

Routing switchers, terminal gear and monitoring are other areas to think about.  VTI staff have been designing and building digital master control systems since 2001.
